AHIMA demands better PHR privacy protections

PHRs are not electronic medical records, exactly--and as some people see it, that's exactly the problem. While EMRs enjoy the same HIPAA protection as paper records do, PHRs don't. AHIMA president Bryon Pickard told Congress that's just wrong. And even if laws in a specific state do target PHRs, when consumers and providers are in different states, the tougher state laws may not apply. A Google vision for health data

Over the last few weeks, Google vice president Adam Bosworth has been making the rounds spelling out the search giant's vision for medical data sharing. Among his key points has been that strong authentication will be critical for the kind of online sharing necessary for patients to really benefit. The laptop was stolen from an office of Electronic Registry Systems (ERS), a business contractor in Ohio, which serves Emory Hospital, Emory Crawford Long Hospital and Grady Memorial Hospital. Records lost included names, social security numbers, patient addresses, medical …

HIPAA case highlights patient legal vulnerability

The recent indictment of a former Florida employee for conspiracy to commit health care fraud with the personal information of more than 1,100 Florida patients probably won't result in big civil fines against the hospital by the federal government--which has yet to sanction a hospital or other health care entity for patient privacy breaches--says a news article in the Florida Naples News.

The case is potentially precedent-setting as it is the first in South Florida to be …

GAO reports numerous security breaches

Oops. More than 40 percent of federal contractors to the Medicare and Tricare programs and state Medicaid agencies responding to a survey by the Government Accountability Office (GAO) said they had experienced privacy breaches involving personal healthcare information of beneficiaries, according to a study of 378 contractors and agencies.

Was outsourcing a factor? Kinda sounds like it. More than 90 percent of Medicare contractors and state Medicaid agencies and 63 percent of …
