CMS is partnering with a group of health plans for a program designed to encourage Medicare beneficiaries to use PHRs. HHS backs genetics-driven, HIT-focused healthcare

HHS Secretary Mike Leavitt unveiled a new initiative on Friday which would rely heavily on advanced health IT tools to individualize and improve patient care.
Leavitt's "Personalized Health Care" program will link genetic information with traditional health records on a large scale, in an effort to predict and thereby prevent the onset of many diseases. Leavitt has said that this effort will be one of his top priorities for the next two years.

Network lets CA med groups locate records

A group of 25-odd California medical practices have come together to create a "clinical message service" designed to help the groups discover and share records. The service, which will tie together groups in rural areas with those in bigger cities, links up practices in Fort Bragg, Ukiah and Lakeport, along with nearby communities in the Mendocino and Lake County region. Feds ease ehealth record rules for doctors

In an effort to encourage wider adoption of digital health records, federal officials last week finalized rules to allow hospitals and others to give doctors computers, software and related services without running afoul of federal fraud and abuse laws. The new policies exempt high-tech gifts from laws limiting products doctors can receive from health care providers without charge, protecting them from prosecution.
