White House panel wants common language for HIE
A White House advisory commission is calling on CMS and the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology to adopt a "universal exchange language" to help simplify and standardize health information exchange. The President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology, a presidentially appointed panel of experts, is recommending that CMS and ONC develop technical definitions and descriptions for a standard ontology, then incorporate the language into Stage 2 and Stage 3 of "meaningful use" requirements to help accelerate electronic exchange of patient records. According to Government Health IT, the report proposes that EMRs be capable of breaking down health information into more granular pieces, each accompanied by a "metadata tag" that describes the data element, the necessary privacy and security protections and patient preferences for use and dissemination of the data element.
