U of Miami, Microsoft test remote monitoring for diabetics

The University of Miami has teamed with Microsoft to pilot-test a new approach to remotely monitoring diabetics, rolling out a new web portal in tandem with the effort.

The program is working with 25 diabetics, most of whom are on Medicaid, and all of whom are poor, to see whether more frequent interaction with doctors and nurses can improve their condition. The patients are being given computers and being trained to use them if needed.

The patients will use a web portal to communicate with doctors and a nurse practitioner to keep clinicians updated on their condition, including their weight and blood-sugar levels. Clinicians then review the data; if something's out of order, a nurse or doctor will reach out to talk, or schedule an in-person visit.

Patients will enter their personal data in HealthVault, Microsoft's personal health record, and the back end will be managed with a grab-bag of Microsoft technology including SharePoint Server, Microsoft Dynamics CRM and Office Communications Server.
