Trend: Open-source tech to ride health IT growth

A big fan of Linux is talking big about how projected increases in healthcare-IT spending spell big opportunities for open source vendors. Open Source Development Lab (OSDL), a consortium dedicated to accelerating the adoption of Linux and open-source software, notes that according to a Rand Corporation study, IT budgets average just 2 to 3 percent of overall healthcare expenditure. By contrast, IT spending comprised between 12 and 15 percent in other industries. As a result, healthcare IT spending is expected to grow at a faster rate than overall IT, increasing the appeal of open source software, say the Linux cheerleaders at OSDL.
