Tenet warns of potential data theft

Hospital chain Tenet Healthcare has notified 37,000 patients that their personal information may have been compromised. The 37,000 patients were drawn from more than 100 facilities, including hospitals Tenet has now divested. The notifications come in the wake of the discovery that a former employee, who has pleaded guilty on identity theft charges, had identity documents for 90 patients in his possession. The former employee had worked at Tenet's billing office in Frisco, Texas, which handles 4 million patient accounts. To help set things right, it's given the 37,000 patients a warning that something might have happened to their data, and set up a credit alert. Meanwhile, Tenet employees have reached out by telephone to the 90 patients whose personal information the ex-employee had, and paid for extra credit monitoring for the patients.
