Survey: More patients creating their own PHRs

For years now, personal health records have been offered free-of-charge by several major companies, but until recently, no one was sure whether patients would actually use them. Now, however, at least one new survey suggests that patients are beginning to take advantage of PHR technology.

In the survey, 27 percent of adult Americans said they were likely or very likely to create their own personal health record. (While this may not be a huge number, it's still a big step forward.) Perhaps the most interesting result of the survey is that the responses didn't vary by age: Americans 55 and over were just as likely to subscribe to a personal health record service as those under 55.

Morpace, Inc., the company that performed the survey, suggests that new technology is being combined with people's desire to manage their own healthcare to drive this new trend. Morpace also thinks it likely that as more people become aware of PHR services, there will be an even greater surge.
