Study: Market for healthcare virtual reality apps growing rapidly

Since the turn of the century, healthcare virtual reality (VR) applications have exploded, and the demand is only going to increase over the next several years, according to a new study by research firm Kalorama Information.  Kalorama is now predicting that by 2010, the U.S. market for virtual reality technologies will hit $290 million. The list of popular heath care VR applications is long and growing, including hands-on uses like pre-operative planning and robotic surgery, creation of 3D medical data models and teaching of the anatomy of body parts. VR technologies are also being used to let medical students practice procedures safely, as well as train practicing professionals in the latest technology. Kalorama researchers say the next step for the VR industry is to establish common technical standards, particularly for use in VR-based surgeries.
