Study: Healthcare RFID use to grow dramatically

A new study is predicting that the use of RFID technologies in healthcare isn't just going to grow over the next four years, it's going to explode. The report, by market research firm Kalorama Information, predicts RFID use in U.S. healthcare markets will climb from a relatively measly $297 million in 2007 to $3.1 billion by 2012.  That's still not huge compared with the $27 billion market for RFID use in supply chain management and manufacturing, but it's a big jump nonetheless.

Kalorama researchers believe this leap in adoption will be fueled as enterprises and vendors figure out how to solve network infrastructure scalability and interoperability problems  and get past the higher costs of initial adoption. Sales of RFID technology will also grow as standards for RFID adoption are developed and industry leaders simply grow more aware of the technology.
