A Department of Veterans Affairs inspector general audit of remote radiological patient image analysis practices found several security holes in the department's handling of patient data. The audit, dated July 20, stemmed from a hotline complaint that contractor Camris International, of Bethesda, Md., did not protect VA patients' data while providing teleradiology services. VA auditors also found that some Camris radiologists were able to copy, transfer and store protected health information onto personal computers when working from home. Though the network connection the remote radiologists used did encrypt data, some personally identifiable information, such as Social Security numbers, were sent to Camris by unencrypted fax from VA facilities.
