Unencrypted thumb drive. "Those three words don't make VA CIOs happy," said Veterans Affairs Department CIO Roger Baker during his monthly press briefing on data breaches. According to Baker, an after-hours guard at the VA's regional benefits office in Nashville, Tenn., found an employee's personal thumb drive, then took the drive home to find out what was on it. As it turned out, the drive contained personal information on 240 veterans, including full names, Social Security Numbers, birth dates, addresses, health information and financial information. The guard's spouse, who has high-security clearance through the Department of Justice and the Drug Enforcement Administration, saw the information and knew it was sensitive information.
