SPOTLIGHT: PACS adoption

More than three-quarters of U.S. hospitals had PACS technology in at least one imaging modality as of 2008, up from 8.5 percent in 2000, according to a new report from the Dorenfest Institute for Health Information Technology, Research and Education. The Dorenfest Institute, which is managed by the HIMSS Foundation, also reports that the top 10 PACS vendors together control about 80 percent of the market, even though the number of vendors offering PACS nearly doubled between 2003 and 2008.
