SPOTLIGHT: Is this whole certification thing being hyped?

Government officials, electronic medical records (EMR) software vendors and much of the industry hailed the first certifications in July of ambulatory EMR software for meeting specific criteria for functionality, interoperability and security and reliability. But reactions varied among consultants specializing in helping clients pick an information technology vendor. Maybe it is a case of those who didn't get it coming down with a case of sour grapes? But while certifying vendors gave the Bush administration a major achievement in its push to increase adoption of clinical information systems, some aspects of certification, particularly interoperability, may have been over-hyped. Article
