Could EMR spending set health IT back?

Sure, nobody in health IT is disappointed that the federal government may soon be spending big bucks to help facilities adopt EMRs. Still, as plans to dole out federal dollars gather steam, some IT execs are warning that if federal largess is spent carelessly, generating waste and confusion, it could actually set back providers' efforts. They're suggesting that it might be a good idea to make sure standards for interoperability are finalized, regional health data networks are in place and doctors have financial incentives to use the technology before legislators proceed much further.
