Here's some breaking news: the Certification Commission for Healthcare Information Technology on Monday morning named Dr. Karen M. Bell as its new chair, effective April 26. Bell, former director of the Office of Health Information Technology Adoption in the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology and former acting ONC deputy coordinator, replaces founding Chairman Dr. Mark Leavitt, who stepped down March 31. She was ONC's representative to CCHIT's board of commissioners from 2006 to 2008, and more recently senior VP for health IT services at Masspro, the Medicare QIO for Massachusetts. "Her background as a practicing physician, as an expert in health information technology, and in quality assurance efforts in both the public and private sectors makes her uniquely qualified to head the Certification Commission," Frank Trembulak, chair of the CCHIT board of trustees--distinct from the commissioners--says in a press release.
