Rhode Island awards $1.7M HIE contract

The state of Rhode Island has committed the funds to build out its statewide health information exchange, and also has chosen a vendor to get the job done. The state's Department of Health has tapped Electronic Data Systems to build a $1.7 million statewide health information exchange. EDS will manage the network build-out for the project, but will use the health data exchange platform from InterSystems Corp. to manage the core of the HIE.

The project should take three years, but includes options for up to four 12-month extensions, suggesting the state isn't exactly clear as to how long the project should run.  Funding for the HIE comes from a $5 million grant from the Agency for Healthcare Quality and Research, which hopes to prove the network's value, then turn it over to the stakeholders.

The project's managers are planning to launch five pilot sites next summer, whose functions will include transmitting lab and pharmacy data. The data will come from Providence-based health system Lifespan, East Side Clinical Laboratory in Provide, prescribing network vendor SureScripts and the Department of Health's Laboratories.
