Report: Health IT central to chronic disease management

Health IT isn't just useful in managing chronically-ill patients, it's actually critical to getting the job done right, according to a new report from a leading analyst firm. Using relevant health IT tools is indispensable in controlling costs and improving treatment for such patients, according to research firm Health Industry Insights, a unit of IDC.

Over the next year to 18 months, health plans will increasingly rely on the medical-home model, and that will force practices to use health IT to document and coordinate care, the analyst firm predicts in a new report. This will include greater use of remote monitoring to help keep chronically-ill patients healthy, the firm says.

Not only that, providers will need to use health IT to look at their entire group of patients as a population, which will call for use of data warehousing, business intelligence and clinical analytics tools, the report suggests.
