One EHR barrier down, one to go

The Certification Commission for Healthcare Information Technology (CCHIT), which is trying to encourage the adoption of healthcare information technology by physicians, last week named the 17 vendors whose ambulatory EHR products pass the commission's muster. Products that comply with 100 percent of the functionality and security criteria tested during the inspection will bear a CCHIT Certified(sm) seal that provides the first real benchmark for ambulatory EHR products, officials said. With any luck, these certifications should shoot down one of the key MD objections to EHRs, i.e. worries about whether the technology will actually work. Now, with groups like the Massachusetts Medical Society offering member MDs access to cheaper EHR technology, another common MD objection should soon go out the window. Cheap and good--now THAT should prove to be a strong one-two punch.
