OCR to survey HIPAA-covered entities about audit process

The U.S. Department of Health & Human Services Office for Civil Rights plans to survey 115 HIPAA-covered entities to get feedback on the auditing process, according to a notice published this week in the Federal Register. The notice specifies that providers, health plans and clearinghouses will be among those surveyed about whether or not they found value in the 2012 HIPAA Compliance Audit Program. A analysis last month of the audited entities by OCR revealed that out of 980 problems identified, 289 (30 percent) were due to ignorance on the part of organizations.

Information gathered through the surveys will be used to improve the audit program, according to the notice. Notice
