Obama to push health IT to cut costs

As President Barack Obama goes before the American Medical Association on Monday to detail his health reform strategy, health IT will prove to be an integral part of his planned overhaul.

In his speech to the AMA, an Obama administration official said the president will make a case "for a health insurance exchange where private plans compete with a public option."

Bloomberg News also reports that health reform legislation in the Senate would "establish online exchanges where the uninsured and employees of small companies could shop for affordable health insurance policies."

Last week in Green Bay, WI, Obama also cited the successes and efficiencies of IT systems used by Intermountain Health in Salt Lake City and the Geisinger Health System in Pennsylvania.
