New York plans $106M in HIT grants
New York's Health Department has announced plans to give out nearly $106 million in grants to promote community collaboration on HIT efforts. Among other things, the state is giving grants to projects that advance HIT system interoperability. It will also fund HIT adoption collaborations, defined as groups of ambulatory care clinicians and affiliated providers who want to use EMRs. This is the state's fifth request for grant applications.
The grant money flows out of major healthcare legislation, The Healthcare Efficiency and Affordability Law for New Yorkers, which is providing a total of $1 billion over four years to restructure the state's health delivery system. In addition to fostering IT adoption efforts, the state is working through a larger health reform effort which involves closing under-utilized hospitals and nursing homes as well as forcing consolidations and restructuring for others.
