In an unusual move, the Michigan State Medical Society is going one step further than most medical societies: instead of just advocating health IT adoption, it is providing a system to its members, free of charge. In fact, the new IT system will also allow non-members to join for a yet-to-be-determined fee. The goal of the MSMS is to connect 15,000 physicians across the state.

Dr. Greg Forzley, chair of the MSMS board of directors, describes the system as a portal through which physicians can log in and then have access to as many or as few IT services as they would like. The applications include e-prescribing, lab results, patient registries, regional health registries and even secure communications with other doctors.
