Mass. MD group strikes EMR deals

So, what's your trade association done for you lately? Maybe you got a nice keychain when you joined, or an invitation to a soggy happy hour? Doctors in Massachusetts may be getting something a bit more valuable from their Medical Society: Serious cost savings for implementing electronic medical records in their practices. While fewer than 20 percent of the Massachusetts Medical Society's 18,500 members currently have electronic medical-record systems in place, that might be about to change. The Society has negotiated a particularly competitive price on EMR records from a few choice vendors and hopes that this encourages its members to move ahead with EMR adoption.

The Society has narrowed its number of vendors to four. As of last week, it was still negotiating with Allscripts and NextGen, and it had announced an agreement with eClinicalWorks. e-MDs's technology had been a long-standing recommendation from the society, approved four years ago by a previous committee. Several members have already implemented it. All the vendors, except for e-MDs, have an ASP, or applications service provider model, very popular with medium-sized and small medical groups that do not have an IT infrastructure and IT team.
