IT-focused doctors do worse without tech

A new study has concluded that while training IT-savvy physicians is good, it could have a downside. The study found that doctors who are used to having high-end IT to support them are uncomfortable working in environments that don't, arguing that they aren't able to provide care that is as safe and efficient.

The study, which was done by Vanderbilt University Medical Center, looked at the reactions of 328 Vanderbilt graduates. It found that 80 percent of the graduates participating in the study ended up working in an environment with less IT than what they had when they were in training. The graduates reported that they felt less able to offer safe patient care, to practice evidence-based care, work efficiently, share information and work effectively within the local system.
