IBM has released a new grid computing solution designed to help hospitals store and retrieve digital images effectively. Its Grid Medical Archive Solution links the company's x Servers and System Storage model EXP3000 with Intel processors and management software from partner Bycast. Grid computing infrastructures have previously been used largely to crunch through huge volumes of data in other industries, such as the financial markets and biotech. IBM argues that as the size of imaging files has increased, thanks to higher resolution, grid architecture becomes a necessity, as it can speed up local delivery of these files. IBM has been experimenting with grid-based digital imaging solutions for years, but until recently, didn't provide the kind of management software Bycast now offers.
