Human genome mapper could increase access to personalized healthcare

A DNA sequencer that can map a human genome within 24 hours at a cost of $1,000 was unveiled this week at both the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas and the J.P. Morgan Healthcare Conference in San Francisco. Dubbed the Ion Proton Sequencer, the machine, which is the size of a laser printer, has the potential both to improve disease research and to increase access to personalized healthcare, reports the Hartford (Conn.) Courant. Ion Torrent, which created the machine and is based in Guilford, Conn., is a division of Carlsbad, Calif.-based Life Technologies.
