Hospitals cutting back on IT projects due to recession

In yet another sign that hospitals continue to struggle with the essentials of their business, a new survey has concluded that more than half of U.S. hospitals have cut back or postponed IT projects due to the ongoing recession.

The study, which was conducted by the American Hospital Association, found that 28 percent of hospitals have cut back on IT projects already underway, and 6 percent of hospitals have reported halting projects entirely. Meanwhile, 27 percent have canceled planned IT projects.

When it comes to clinical projects specifically, the numbers are just as grim. Thirty-four percent of hospitals have canceled clinical technology plans, 32 percent are cutting back on such projects, and 6 percent have canceled clinical projects already under way.
