HIT deal volumes fall for first quarter of '09

Sure, health IT deals are usually a hot category. But that didn't prevent them from slipping a bit during the first quarter of 2009, with the volume of deals dropping a full 31 percent during that period.

M&A deals among e-health companies, including developers of web-based applications, EMRs and PHRs, fell from 13 in the last quarter of last year, to nine for the first three months of this year, according to research by Irving Levin Associates.

Biotechnology and pharma deals, meanwhile, were a hot part of the health IT sector. Researchers believe this has been due to those companies' ability to use strong cash flow to attract capital investors.
