HIMSS says more hospitals close to adopting comprehensive EMRs

In contrast to a report released last week in the New England Journal of Medicine, HIMSS Analytics--a Chicago-based HIMSS research unit--found that two-thirds of U.S. hospitals have made measured progress in adopting electronic medical records. HIMSS Analytics also claims that its data on 5,166 hospitals indicates that most only need to add one or two applications in order to institute a comprehensive EMR system.

However, the NEJM report found that only 1.5% of hospitals have adopted a comprehensive system, although more could begin the process once President Obama's economic stimulus package provides financial incentives through Medicaid and Medicare for hospitals that implement EMR systems with functions such as clinical documentation, ancillary department information systems, order entry and decision support.
