Groups to create best practices for health information exchanges

Now this seems to make sense, given the erratic way in which health information networks are emerging state-to-state and region-to-region: A pair of organizations have come together to create consensus on best practices for data exchange within health networks, as well as give HIEs an incentive to get certified as following those rules.

The best practices are being pulled together by the Council for Affordable Quality Healthcare (CAQH) and Electronic Healthcare Network Accreditation Commission (EHNAC), both of which offer certifications for health data exchange.

CAQH's CORE initiative will start out by offering rules letting providers securely get eligibility and benefits information. Then, the rules will be phased in gradually, starting with operating rules on claims status transactions. EHNAC, meanwhile, has standards for privacy and confidentiality protection, level-of-service assurances, transaction response and system availability within networks.
