Group studies RFID implants for dialysis
To date, most of the attention given to RFID implants has focused on blood glucose monitoring. Now, a non-profit serving dialysis patients is looking at ways to use implants as well. Working with vendor VeriChip Corp., which creates RFID systems, the Independent Dialysis Foundation will begin studying the use of RFID for similar purposes. The foundation, which is Maryland's largest independent dialysis center operator, is affiliated with the University of Maryland.
To conduct the trial, 500 of IDF's patients and families will be given access to RFID microchips for a year. After that year, patients will be asked to assess their experience with the chips, and clinicians will study rates of complications and usefulness of information provided at key points of care.
