GA cancer group shares data with community centers

A Georgia-based cancer group has plans to use a statewide healthcare information exchange to share evidence-based medicine with community-based cancer centers.

The HIE will serve as an intermediary to collect, analyze and report de-identified patient data around quality measures from providers and hospitals already delivering care. Performance measures will be based on 52 quality-of-care indicators for Georgia, identified by the Institute of Medicine.

At present, discoveries around cancer care can take up to 15 years to go from the bench to the bedside, but using the HIE, the community centers where 85 percent of cancer takes place can take advantage of these advancements far more quickly. The HIE will also be sued to share results with research groups.

The HIE will be deployed in three phases over about nine to 12 months. It will involve three initial provider sites and include data analysis, development of HIE design and deployment.
