DC Medicaid agency plans HIE

Maybe it takes a kick in the pants from government to get health information exchanges moving. In this case, the aforementioned kick is coming from the Department of Health Care Finance, the District of Columbia's state Medicaid agency, which expects to implement a Medicaid-focused HIE pilot within a year.

The Patient Data Hub is connecting clinicians, three hospitals and six clinics serving Medicaid beneficiaries to use and share clinical information at the point of care. That data will be delivered through a web portal and an interoperable data exchange.

The HIE is being implemented by MedPlus, the health IT subsidiary of Quest Diagnostics. Clinicians will work with MedPlus Centergy, a clinical portal and data exchange service. MedPlus Centergy gives clinicians a connection to a national network linking 85 EMR vendors and more than 140,000 network physicians.

The system will also include data analysis capabilities allowing officials to identify care problems and at-risk groups, track new initiatives and find opportunities for care improvement.
