Case study: Texas doctors get patient data via mobile

Now here's a strategy your editors expect to see being piloted nationwide, given that more than 50 percent of all U.S. physicians own PDAs or other mobile devices. Tomball (TX) Regional Medical Center has begun feeding real-time patient data to physicians via their mobile devices.

IT managers at the 358-bed facility are broadcasting the data using Clinical Xpert Navigator, pushing it to physicians' BlackBerries, smartphones, Palm and Windows Mobile-based devices as well as their desktop computers.

The Clinical Xpert technology not only makes the data available to physicians, it also analyzes it to identify high-risk patients, looking at factors such as laboratory results, vital signs, medications, diagnoses, age and gender. When it finds such patients, it pings the physicians' mobile devices to let them know, allowing them to respond more quickly to their needs.
