Case study: Partners invests in SOA

Working with Siemens Medical Solutions, Boston-based Partners HealthCare has decided to make a substantial investment in service-oriented architecture. Over the next 12 months, the health system will work its medication, problem and eventing services into the new architecture, using the Siemens Soarian SOA platform. This despite the fact that CIO John Glaser considers SOA to be "over-hyped and still immature." "I believe that SOA...is a very profound shift in the way that we think about and construct applications and effect interoperability," said Glaser, who predicts that SOA will speed up service development and reduce costs. Over time, the system will allow Partners to achieve greater application interoperability, Glaser said.
