Case study: MI system slashes errors with online ordering

The University of Michigan is reporting that its new online order entry system has proven to be quite a success. The system, which it implemented in its University Hospital and Cardiovascular Center, allows doctors, nurses and techs to order lab tests, procedures, meds and nutrition services online. While they're doing so, the system feeds them information on patient allergies, drug interactions and other relevant information.

Since its cautious partial rollout in 2005, the order entry system already has generated a 29 percent cut in medication errors and has reduced time between ordering and administration of urgent meds by 40 percent. Since June 2007, the University of Michigan has trained almost 5,300 staff members to use the system.
