Case study: Henry Ford digitizing referred patients' records

Detroit, MI-based Henry Ford Health System, a regional system which includes six hospitals and 1,800 affiliated physicians, has signed a deal under which it will digitize records from all providers that refer patients to the system. To digitize the records, Henry Ford will use eHealthConnect, developed by eHealth Global Technologies. eHealth Global will collect and digitize medical records and images upon request from referring providers. Once the records are digitized, they'll be shunted either into Henry Ford's CarePlus EMR system or, in the case of images, into the relevant PACS or image viewing system.

This is a shrewd move. For one thing, it not only gives Henry Ford access to more data on its incoming patients, but also tightens its relationship with physicians. Meanwhile, it sidesteps the issue of whether the system can give away EMR systems to the physicians. I predict this will work well.
