Case study: EMR incentives convince LA physicians to buy in

If the following is a reflection of what will happen as the federal stimulus rolls out, policymakers should be very happy. A federal pilot product designed to help doctors choose, set up and pay for electronic medical records has drawn almost 240 small to medium-sized medical practices.

Participating groups will get help choosing and learning how to use EMRs. Half of the groups will also get up to $58,000 per doctor, or $290,000 per practice in federal funding over the next five years.

The program offering these incentives includes a total of twelve states, with Louisiana being among the first four to participate. It will be interesting to see if other states see similar results, as local dynamics can vary so widely in healthcare markets. However, given the size of this assistance package--and its comprehensive nature--it seems like a more realistic approach than many others attempted in the marketplace.
