Case study: Duke simplifies complex dosing

Hoping to increase dosing accuracy for high-risk patients, Duke University Hospital is rolling out a new, advanced dose monitoring function for its CPOE and clinical decision support system. Duke, which uses McKesson Provider Technologies' CPOE system, is rolling the new function out as an add-on from McKesson. The system will offer patient-specific recommendations for dosing, tailored to the patient's age, dosing weight, body surface area, renal function, diagnosis and other factors. It also will provide dose calculators. The hospital believes that the new system will be particularly relevant to pediatric and neonatal care, given that minor errors can cause big problems for babies, and that weight and age-based dosing is particularly complex for this population.
