Case study: Brigham and Women's tests automated follow-up on meds

Brigham & Women's Hospital has started testing what happens to patients who receive automated telephone follow-up calls that query how they're doing with their medications. The test includes primary care patients prescribed any of 32 medications for several chronic conditions. Patients selected to participate are given a choice to opt out, but more than 90 percent choose to participate.

The system supporting this effort uses interactive voice response and speech technology, the CallAssure system, built by Ottawa, Canada-based Vocantas Inc. The new system, which supports HL7, automatically records any symptoms the patient reports, then creates a note attached to the patient's EMR. If the patient's responses suggest a higher-priority concern, the survey system will kick out an email notification to a physician.
