California EDs set up health information exchange

A group of 23 California emergency departments have come together to form a health information exchange, beginning with medical information on patients in state health plans.

The new HIE is being launched as a partnership between the California Regional Health Information Organization (CalRHIO) and the Orange County Partnership Regional Health Information Organization.

The program will begin by providing ED physicians with EMR data on patients enrolled in California's Medicaid program and the Healthy Kids program for children. At launch, the program will include data on 360,000 patients.

By 2010, the CalRHIO system will offer additional data, including medical histories, laboratory data and clinical claims data for patients with private insurance. Eventually, the system will let physicians in Orange County communicate with fellow clinicians and hospitals statewide.
