Calif. offers $25 million in tele-health grants

California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (R) has announced a new $25 million fund to provide new grants for healthcare technology projects, particularly for tele-health programs in medically underserved areas of the state. The grants will be awarded through a competitive bidding process. Grantees who prevail are likely to be those pitching HIT improvements for safety-net providers, including critical access hospitals, health clinics and county health departments.

The announcement comes as part of the governor's larger healthcare proposals, which involve several efforts aimed at transforming health IT. Schwarzenegger already has issued an executive order which sets a goal of achieving 100 percent electronic health data exchange in California over the next 10 years.
