Emerging health information group CalRHIO, which is in the process of building a $300M statewide information network, is moving on to the next stage in its development process and selecting two vendors which will be tasked with doing the build-out. CalRHIO has picked Medicity and Perot Systems after a competitive bidding process which lasted several months. Medicity and Perot Systems are playing a unique role, for a vendor, in that they'll also be asked to help CalRHIO get private seed money to fund build-out costs. The rest of the funds are coming from participating healthcare organizations, but only after the project has demonstrated its feasibility. The group wants to prove that the network works well enough to pay for itself by charging health plans and providers transaction fees. The two vendors are expected to have the backbone of the system implemented within 18 months. However, CalRHIO doesn't expect to complete the project for two to three years.
