In what is becoming an increasingly common move for state Medicaid organizations, Alabama's Medicaid agency is testing a Web-based electronic medical record in nine counties. The EMR, which is part of a $7.6 million project funded with federal dollars, will give physicians access to patient medical histories.

To date, the state agency has trained 59 healthcare provider sites to use the EMR system, and plans to train more Medicaid providers this month. The state plans to add e-prescribing to its system in February.
