Tales of data breaches are becoming all too common, with one of the latest possibly affecting up to 3,300 patients at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center. Employees at the facility learned of the breach in May, but did not inform patients until last week, NewsObserver.com reports. Servers immediately were blocked to protect data when the breach occurred.

According to Ellen de Graffenreid, director of communications and marketing at Lineberger, no one has reported identity theft as a result of hacking, so farEach of the 3,300 files had to be examined to determine whether personal information had been compromised, de Graffenreid said.

"It was very intensive and very time-consuming to sift through all of the information," she said. "We are very concerned with accuracy." Article
