OB aplication for use in iPhone cleared by FDA

The FDA has cleared a new obstetrics app for use on the iPhone, one of what we editors believe will be a rapidly growing stream of such medically-related iPhone software.

The software, AirStrip OB, allows obstetricians to use their iPhones to remotely access real-time and historical waveform data for both the mother and baby. Data available includes heart tracings and contraction patterns, as well as nursing notes and exam status.

Once collected, the iPhone data is sent directly from hospitals' labor and delivery units. It will be accessible to the iPhone anywhere the doctor can get a cell-phone connection.

The new iPhone app was created by San Antonio, TX-based AirStrip Technologist, which makes mobile medical software applications. The application can now be downloaded for use by qualified physicians from the Apple App Store.
