Why it matters: MDVIP has developed a packaged method helping physicians create smaller “concierge” practices, supported by fees from patients that make up for the money lost from the cutback. What’s special—and important—is the way it uses its proprietary .Net technology to automate key parts of the patient’s experience in these concierge practices. The technology, which is a core part of the company’s franchise concierge model, sets doctors up with a two-way tool allowing patients to develop a wellness-oriented personal health profile prior to a visit, with data including social supports, nutritional habits, community and more. The doctor can then use the information, delivered via his or her own personal portal, to get prepared, and drop the information automatically into a related EMR. Using this approach, physicians can then spend 30 to 60 minutes or more doing a thorough physical and going over wellness issues, rather than spending their time hoping to get into their patient’s head or grasp their overall lifestyle.
What to look for: While execs aren’t saying who’s behind it, MDVIP has just received a minority investment from a large health IT industry player. With more capital and clout behind the 200-odd person company, we expect to see rapid uptake of their franchise concierge model—and the million-dollar IT infrastructure behind it.
