Why it matters: It just makes sense.
Devon IT has built a laptop that comes with a thin client but no hard drive, a model that harkens back to mainframe days, in an effort to avoid the “lost laptop, lost data†syndrome. While the thin-client laptop could be used by any industry, Devon picked out healthcare as perhaps the best place to promote it given HIPAA concerns (and we agree). True, Devon isn’t the only vendor doing this, but we like the way the company puts itself out there, forming partnerships with giants like IBM, to promote its new generation of client-server computing.
What to look for: DevonIT’s next launch is a new line of hard-driveless desktop computers. Working with IBM, VMWare and Citrix, Devon is setting up a lab where companies can test out these server-hosted desktop solutions. (Devon execs say they’re the first to build out this type of technology.) The company claims that they haven’t run into any key application that can’t be run with a thin client.
